Where to buy and how to get fitted – plus WIN custom-fit boots

-

There’s no doubt about it, you can get some great deals online. You can search from the comfort of your own home; you have the world at your fingertips; there’s some great advice to be found; and you don’t have to waste time and money going into a shop. For many things buying online is a great option.

However, when it comes to walking boots, fit is absolutely key; and – let’s face it – however good the boot, everyone is different. Buying boots is possibly the most important purchase for a hillwalker, and can make the difference between a gleeful skip or a painful hobble across those mountains. They’re not cheap either, so it’s even more important that you get the right pair.

In store you can try on as many models as you like and compare and contrast how they fit, how they feel and how they look on. You can get a much better measure of quality and features by seeing them. Reputable outdoor shops will also have knowledgeable staff who will help you pick the right boot for the type of walking you want to do. Some shops will offer a measuring service to ensure you get the perfect fit and help you decide if you need any accessories.

Research into shopping habits shows that many people are browsing in shops and then buying online. Some stores will price match, but others may not. At the end of the day, you get the service you pay for.

Trail verdict: Support our outdoor retailers – go into store, try the boots on, get the right advice, get measured up, and make sure you go home with the right footwear for you.
