Scarpa R-Evo GTX

+ weight; price; comfort; durable rubber toe rand

– shallow lugs and heel breast; upper less supportive; less durable

Scarpa’s Sock Fit technology is built into this boot to provide a better fit. The upper features Scholler S-tech fabric around the tongue and ankle cuff collar, suede leather around the sides and a rubber rand at the toe. Gore-Tex provides the waterproof lining, while underfoot there’s a Vibram Fagus Lite sole which has relatively shallow lugs compared to others. The main benefit is the low weight for its design. 4/5

Men’s sizes are 41-47 and women’s 37-42. The fit is extremely neat and precise around the foot, with the tongue nestling nicely under the laces. The forefoot and toe space are slightly closer than some of the wider designs, but overall this is a good, general fit. The ankle cuff is similar to others tested, but slightly softer in flex. 5/5

The weight of just 1508g (size 46) per pair, combined with the excellent fit as well as soft lining, makes the R-Evo GTX extremely easy to wear. They have quite a soft flex so walking on easier ground is very comfortable, but others tested are more supportive in the sole, ankle cuff area and across the upper for better ease of traversing rockier ground. 5/5

It’s a useful, general trekking boot, but the outsole has shallow lugs and a heel breast that’s not as good as others. The result is less security on muddy slopes, and the likelihood that the lugs will wear smooth sooner than deeper ones. The sole flex and soft upper means it’s not so great for rockier ground, nor as durable as those with less stitching and a full rand. 3/5

The price tag is better than many others, but you are getting a little less performance in the stiffness and sole lugs. 4/5

A very lightweight boot that is good for trekking on paths, but others have benefits for softer ground 4.2/5 and rockier ground.
