+ leather upper; Gore-Tex lining; heel and toe rand; wide variety of lasts

chunky sole; weight – These have a nubuck leather upper, which is hardwearing and supportive. Nubuck tends to be less resistant to water damage than fullgrain leather but a Gore-Tex lining improves protection. There’s a hefty rubber rand at the toe and another at the heel, adding protection on rocky terrain, while multi-directional lugs on the Vibram sole help with grip and braking. Easy to resole, they'll last a long time with care . 4/5

The Tatras come in four fits: ‘wide’, ‘normal’, ‘narrow’ and ‘bunion’. I found the ‘narrow’ tight around the toes, so opted for ‘normal’. They fit snugly at the midfoot with plenty of room at the toe and only marginal heel lift. As the leather softens they should become more mouldable and so fit better. Sizes are 3½-9 for women; 6-13 for men, both including halves. 5/5

These are quite stiff and protective boots, great for walloping your way across rocky ground. They’re a little less comfy than some others straight away (mostly around the top of the foot, I found) butthe leather will soften in time, so and fit and comfort levels will improve. Soft leather padding around the cuff supports the ankle nicely, and though there’s less cushioning underfoot than some others it’s still good. 4/5

Well-suited to general British hillwalking, these protect your feet from boulder bumps, smash through heather, and grip well on mud and wet rock. Their weight and that chunky sole make them less sensitive and precise, so they’re not ideal for scrambling. They have a rolling gait that makes long mountain walks easier, good support and protection. They’re warm, too. 4/5

A solid mountain boot, but at this price I’d want afull-grain leather upper. They’re designed to be resoled so with care should have longevity. 3/5

Not great for scrambling but a solid all-round mountain boot that will power through three British 4.0/5 seasons with ease.
