Keswick to Ullscarf

-

NY263235 From Keswick Bus Station pass Booths supermarket on your left to a mini roundabout. Turn right here along the High St and continue when it becomes pedestrianised. At the far end of the Market Square, take the left exit to pass the George Hotel and continue straight ahead to the outskirts of town.

NY271230

Turn right onto Springs Road and follow this to Springs Farm, where the tarmac ends. Pass the farm shop and continue beside the stream through woodland. Just before a washed away bridge, turn right towards Rakefoot Farm and Walla Crag, then bend left to rise above the stream at a higher level.

NY278224 Pass a mobile phone mast, dip slightly into the top of woodland, before bending sharp left across a footbridge. Rise up to a country lane (turn right along it), then at a second footbridge cross back over the river and into access land above Walla Crag. Now you’re roughly following the wall line with views opening up behind and across to Blencathra and Skiddaw. NY278215 Take a short (through) detour through a gate in the wall for some great views over Keswick, Derwent Water and Skiddaw from Walla Crag before returning to the main path. Descend gently to a cairn. NY276209 This marks the start of a fainter path left, rising up to Bleaberry Fell, first heading south across open moorland on a stony track and undulating briefly across a couple of small streams. Pass left and below a small rocky outcrop, followed by a stone sheepfold, then rise gently on a wide arc along the western slopes of Bleaberry Fell, before rising more steeply to the summit.

NY285195 A large cairn marks a return to a southerly direction over the broad summit ridgeline. There is a particularly boggy area to cross, with a few large peaty streams plus side-drains to cross a wire fence. Rise up past a few outcrops over grassy terrain to gain a trig point on High Seat.

NY286180 For the next 3km over High Tove to Shivery Knott, maintain the roughly southerly direction along the middle of the broad grassy ridge. The ground is generally boggy, you will often be pushed left by bog-pools, but a wire-fence gives a rough handrail. A slight rise leads to the summit cairn of High Tove, later there’s a brief wiggle left around the top of Middle Crag. As you begin to rise up Shivery Knott, the best line follows an old line of rusty fence posts rather than the newer fence, rejoining after the Knott.

NY289147 The path veers left to pass above Blea Tarn, still using the fenceline as a handrail. A path rejoins from the tarn through a gate; shortly after this, detour left from the fenceline and up a grassy ramp through an easy nick on Standing Crag before regaining the wire fence.

NY297130 Bend right at a corner, now following a line of rusty fence posts. These bend right then left, then march across the broad ridgeline and up Ullscarf.
