Mosedale Horseshoe Lake District
This horseshoe walk around the head of Mosedale is a bit of a lopsided affair and the peaks that make it up are a little random, with each summit having a different character to the next. You would think this individuality would work against the route, making it a less attractive prospect than others, but nothing could be further from the truth because this disparate group of mavericks provides step after step of pure entertainment.
The traditional route around the Mosedale Round avoids Kirk Fell and ducks off the main ridge to take in the high-level route that allows close-up views of Pillar Rock. The rest of the route is a fairly standard fell walk following the Mosedale skyline.
Steeple is ever so slightly out on a limb, but worth it for the views, and Little Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow are all nicely in sequence. However they are not standard peaks, as you will discover when you walk over them, which is what makes this slightly off-the-wall route one of the best in the Lakes.
