Zip-off trousers
Budget-friendly options for summer
POCKETS
If you want to store anything in the pockets while walking then a zip is essential to stop items falling out. If you like to keep a map or guidebook to hand when not wearing a pocketed jacket, then a large map-sized thigh pocket is ideal. A secure pocket for a phone or GPS receiver is also useful.
ZIP-OFF LEGS
To allow the lower legs to be removed, zips are provided above the knee. It’s important that these operate smoothly and are comfortable against the skin. An external flap over the zip both protects it and increases discretion of the design, while an internal flap prevents the skin from being scratched by the zip. A zip from the ankle to the calf (ankle zip) allows the lower legs to be easily removed without having to take off your boots, but not all trousers have this feature.
DURABILITY
Heavier fabrics, and those with a high nylon content, are often more durable, but lighter trousers may have reinforced panels on the ankle cuff, seat and knees to improve longterm wear. Lighter fabrics are usually more comfortable in warmer climates.
WAIST DESIGN
A stretchy waist, either with a belt, or the option to fit one, gives all-round adjustability. Some waistbands are lined with soft fabric for more comfort, while others sit higher at the back to prevent cold spots when bending over.
FABRIC
Stretch materials are commonly used to improve freedom of movement in the knees and seat. Some trousers are made from stretch material throughout for even greater comfort. Less stretchy materials will tend to be a looser fit to allow freedom of movement.
ANKLE CUFF
The ankle area of trousers can be too wide, so it flaps about and potentially collects mud, snags on undergrowth or gets torn. Conversely, a narrow, close-fitting ankle is not always the most fashionable, depending on trends, so many walkers prefer a medium, relaxed fit. More travel-orientated designs tend to be wider, while mountaineering-orientated designs tend to be narrower.
