MEET THE ROOKIES
Tony Read
Three years ago Tony was told by his GP that if he didn’t stop smoking, lose weight, and drastically change his lifestyle, he was in line for some serious health complications.
Since then, he has quit cigarettes, lost 6st in weight, and become something of a fitness addict, entering obstacle course races and triathlons. Just recently, he completed the 2017 London Marathon in five hours and five minutes.
In 2015, Tony climbed his first mountain, Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons. Taking the ‘go big or go home’ approach, the opportunity to climb the UK’s highest mountain was too enticing a challenge to pass up.
Simon Weeks
Simon is not entirely new to hillwalking, having toured several of the Lake District’s youth hostels as a student. However, this was… some time ago, and since then most of Simon’s walking has been around the flat countryside of his home county, Norfolk. Since retirement, though, he has been upping the distances covered, and will regularly walk between 15 and 20 miles a day.
In 2016, Simon walked the entire coast of the Isle of Wight over a few days, but was keen to turn his feet to something more mountainous at the other end of the country. He’s also the writer’s dad.
