RESCUE FACTS

-

"Rob Johnson, head of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team:

”Fortunately, in our area we only see one or two call-outs a year involving dogs. The most common issue is dogs being let off the lead when they are not stockproof. We have known dogs to chase sheep off the edge of cliffs, and then either be fatally injured or stuck. The other cause of call-outs are injuries from slips and falls, or in winter we see dogs that have been stepped on by crampons. It's best to build up the environments that you take your dog out in gradually – after nine years my collie shows me the way on some really hard routes!”

Bryn Williams, Mountain Training Cymru:

”Common problems we do come across are caused by paw pads getting sore on longer walks; dehydration in summer on routes, like Snowdon, that don’t pass any regular water stops; and hypothermia in cold, wet weather where dogs are not wearing a jacket.”
