GARMIN FORETREX 601 £220

-

Remember those Casio calculator watches that were, for a very brief period in the 1980s, the must-have gadget? That’s what this Foretrex reminded us of. It’s not exactly sleek, and has a design that’s more Betamax than but – and this is the kicker – the performance is very much 21st century. Along (American), the Foretrex also utilises GLONASS (Russian) and Galileo navigation systems. It runs off the ubiquitous AAA battery its size) from which it can squeeze 48 hours of use in navigation mode and one month in watch mode. is constructed to military standards shock- and water-resistant The 701 model offers this with ‘Ballistics Elite’ software “calculate aiming solutions for long-range shooters”. That’ll cost you an extra £310, so – as we’re not in the habit of shooting anything, long-range or otherwise – we’ll stick to the 601 which, at a sliver under £220, is remarkably good value for a wrist-mounted Garmin GPS unit.

WE SAY Clunky looks can be forgiven for the performance at this price. www.garmin.com
