Marmot Moblis
£160 Men’s S-XXL Women’s XS-XL Weight 718g (size M) Material M2 Softshell fabric (86% ripstop nylon; 14% elastane); 100% polyester lining
The tough stretchy M2 soft shell fabric is durable thanks to the high nylon content, and it’s also extremely water-and wind-resistant due to its bonded 2-layer laminate construction. The result is that it easily fends off fog, water, snow and general autumnal dampness while being hard-wearing. A close and short fit is combined with good movement in the sleeves for scrambling, and the two main pockets take a map with ease and can be accessed while wearing a climbing harness or rucksack hipbelt. The third chest pocket is smaller but fine for a compass or GPS receiver. The hood fits closely and moves with the head. Overall, it’s a great all-rounder for tough active mountain conditions. At the more waterresistant end of the soft shell scale, this is less breathable than some other options so it is best worn instead of a waterproof hard shell, rather than under one. It’s relatively heavy, so is better worn rather than carried. You can get lower-priced jackets, but may not get the benefits on offer here. Durable jacket for tough and damp scrambles and snowy days when a full waterproof would be overly cumbersome, but it’s less breathable than some others.
