Essential Baffled Jacket

-

£30 Men's XS-XXXXXL Women's 8-22 Weight 520g (size L) Outer nylon Insulation polyester

IT'S GOOD

The price tag is outstanding for what you get. The jacket has a nylon shell, like higher priced jackets, but it feels more durable, and the insulation is synthetic polyester. There are two deep pockets with zips placed around the hip area and a hood with elastication around the face. The hem and cuffs have elastication too. It fits acceptably and has a slightly longer body than other jackets, which is great. There is a massive size range available – far greater than most jackets. The level of insulation is pretty good for the price and would be fine for autumn and mild winter days.

HOWEVER

This is relatively heavy for the insulation it provides and a little more bulky, compared to higher priced jackets that use thinner shell materials and more efficient insulation. Some other jackets are warmer and would be better for winter. There are no hem drawcords, cuff or hood adjustments, so it fits where it touches and can be drafty in these areas. The hood does not turn with the head at all and does not fit closely. Also, the cuffs tend to ride up quite easily. Importantly, there is no baffle behind the zip, so this area is chilly.

VERDICT

If your budget is tight this is excellent for a campsite or summit brew, but more cash brings many benefits.
