5 THINGS TO DO NOW...

-

CONVERT YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

1 Unless you’re in the lucky minority who has a partner with an equal love of the great outdoors, pick a rewarding hill and plan a weekend of outdoor bliss with some romantic touches that can’t fail to convert them into a hill fanatic. If there’s absolutely no hope, or you’re single, then aim to make a friend’s life more mountainfulfilled instead! Hopefully you’ll have more success than Mary-Ann Ochota (p25)!

BRING HISTORY TO LIFE

2 When Trail visited the Isle of Eigg we found a previously undiscovered skeleton of a teenager who had been massacred in the 1500s (see page 40). Mountains have secrets, so make it your mission to go on a historical walk to gain an appreciation of times past and unravel the mysteries hidden in the hills.

LEARN TO LOVE WINTER!

3 Some of us hang up our walking boots in winter. If that’s you, maybe it’s time to take a fresh look at what winter has to offer. As well as the added sense of adventure, frosted views and crisp, clear skies, the feeling only described by hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is magnified tenfold – and that warm glow with the fire on and the joy of a good meal makes it so worth it. Could it actually be the best time of year? Gen up on your winter skills on p54.

THINK SMALL

4 The biggies – Snowdon, Helvellyn, Ben Nevis… all very worthy objectives – but have you considered that beautiful hill days can also be had in the smaller contours of the UK, as we discovered in the Peak District (p30)? Particularly with a dusting of snow on the ground, lowlier hills appear gentrified and take on the grandeur of their much larger siblings. Why not make it your mission to discover somewhere new this winter that you’ve previously overlooked?
