How can I escape a bog?

-

Q I have been waist-deep in mud in a bog on Kinder. What do you do if you get stuck? What’s the best way to get out? Natya Filipenko, via email

Rob says This is a pretty frightening experience, albeit thankfully not one I’ve have had to escape from. However, if you are unlucky enough to become firmly stuck in the grip of a bog, a little bit of knowledge could be a lifesaver. Although being completely swallowed by a bog is unlikely in the UK, succumbing to the elements because you’re unable to move is a real danger.

First off you need to resist the rising panic and take a few deep breaths; this situation is escapable and fighting hard will only make things worse. Once you have calmed down you can see if it is possible to gently extract one leg at a time. If you are waist-deep then you are probably past this stage so you need to lie down on your back. This will spread your weight over the maximum surface area and allow you to extract your legs.

Once extraction is complete, barrel roll to the nearest hard ground. Don’t attempt to stand up until you are sure the ground under your feet is firm – you don’t want to have to begin the battle with the bog again!

Once you’ve escaped, you may feel up to continuing with your walk. However, as you could well be exhausted and wet, it may be prudent to head off the hill and to the nearest pub for a restoring cup of tea or maybe something a tad stronger!
