Corrour Bothy to Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine & Braeriach

-

1 NN981957

An early start for the second day. Beginning from Corrour Bothy, head directly behind the bothy to begin and onto the first of the mountains. A path leads from the bothy up the Coire Odhar between The Devil’s Point and Stob Coire an t-Saighdeir, alongside the burn that comes down from the moutains. The track zigzags upwards as you climb. Please note: the path is not distinguishable under snow in winter and, above the burn, cornices build up during a heavy dump. In this case, it’s advisable to ascend the northern slopes of The Devil’s Point before traversing around towards the top of the path.

Once off the path, continue north. There are no marked routes, but some distinguishable ground is noticeably frequented by walkers. Under snow, this will not be visible, so head north to summit Cairn Toul – keeping the cliffs to your right-hand side.

From Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine is only a short distance away. Braeriach will be visible in good weather to the north. Again, keeping the cliffs to your right, descend Cairn Toul, and then ascend a steady slope to summit Sgor an Lochain Uaine.

With two of the 4000ers bagged in quick succession, Braeriach is a bit more of a mission. Travel west over undulating ground which soon takes you north and upwards onto Carn na Criche, itself high but not of Munro status. Continue north again, keeping east of the Wells of Dee, descending to the point the Falls of Dee begin, then ascending north-east to the summit of Braeriach.

Once Braeriach has been summited, descend north-east to the narrowing ridge, before swinging north up to Sron na Lairige. From here it is a straight descent north down to the Lairig Ghru. As you descend, keep the cliffs to your right-hand side to ensure you follow the direct path.

From the top of the Lairig Ghru, it’s a straight-forward case of following your previous route back to Corrour Bothy.
