Silva Scout RC £54
“Simple, lightweight and easy to use”
This is a relatively simple headtorch with limited functions, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Its simplicity makes it easy to use and keeps the weight low. There are just two main power settings – 320 lumens and 50 lumens – plus a strobe and a red light for night vision. And… that’s about it. But the Scout RC isn’t without some clever touches. The double lamp shines two beams simultaneously: one wider angle for better peripheral illumination and seeing the ground close to your feet, and a narrower beam for lighting the way further ahead. The maximum power output of 320 lumens is good for such a compact lamp and offers more than enough brightness for most uses.
IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY…
A mid-level power setting would be more useful than the 50 lumens for general use. It’s too easy for the lamp to be turned on accidentally – it’s a single button push with no lock. If you run out of power, there’s no option to pop in AAs – it has to be plugged in to recharge.
■ Max power 300 lumens
■ Max burn time 25 hours
(at 50 lumens)
■ Max beam distance 60m ■ Batteries Integrated lithiumpolymer rechargeable pack ■ Weight 76g
■ Ingress protection rating IPX5 (water-resistant)
Verdict
Perfect as a lightweight headtorch for occasional or emergency use, but more adventurous walkers and regular night owls will want more performance, including the adaptability of being able to use regular batteries.
