Jack Wolfskin Exolight I £350

-

The Exolight I is a very spacious tent for one, with impressive head clearance, a roomy vestibule and a bonus smaller porch to the rear. A clever pole arrangement, which forks at both ends and has an integrated cross pole in the centre, maximises the peak and creates steeply-raked walls. The floor width is quite narrow but it isn’t really noticeable because of the superb liveability.

All-in-one pitching is very easy, with the inner-outer combo clipping to the external, skeletal pole. This approach is far better than the MSR Hubba and Nemo Hornet’s inner-first pitching.

The siliconised, 20-denier flysheet has taped seams, a 1500mm hydrostatic head rating and a side door. The 40-denier, 5000mm groundsheet has a bathtub style, and the inner is almost entirely mesh for improved ventilation. There is good clearance between the fly and inner, with tension straps and cord effectively maintaining the tent’s integrity. Stability in wind is good too.

IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY

The floorspace is a little narrower than expected and the weight is on the heavy side, with components such as the clips and straps seeming unnecessarily bulky. The inner’s mesh composition makes the tent feel draughty and cold when the temperature drops.

■ INTERNAL DIMENSIONS (LxWxH) 215x60x100cm

■ PACKED SIZE 43x12cm ■ WEIGHT 1435g

Verdict

A well-priced, mid-range tent with good headroom, spacious liveability and a roomy vestibule.
