MSR Hubba NX Solo £385
Where other tents can feel cramped and claustrophobic, the Hubba NX Solo is roomy and comfortable with superb liveability – thanks to its scientific-sounding ‘optimised, symmetrical geometry’. A cleverly-designed skeletal pole, which the inner clips to tightly, creates nearvertical walls and maximum head and elbow room. A goodsized side porch and a non-tapered floor add to the sense of spaciousness.
The inner, which is pitched first, is freestanding and can be easily repositioned to ensure you’re camping on the flattest, softest spot. It has a bathtub-style floor, with the waterproof material extending up the side wall a few inches, and a mesh upper for good ventilation (and stargazing on clear nights when the fly isn’t required). The Durashieldcoated flysheet has a large triangular door and provides 3-season rated protection against wind and rain, while tension straps ensure the fly stays taught.
You get eight lightweight pegs and four guylines, and everything packs easily into a compression stuffsack.
IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY
At 1290g it’s a little heavier than preferable and the inner pitch first set-up is not ideal for rainy climes. Wind can whip under the fly, which isn’t completely flush to the ground, and the outer’s 1200mm hydrostatic head means waterproofing isn’t particularly impressive.

Verdict
A superb 3-season tent with great features and excellent liveability – it feels palatial compared to many.
