Sherpa Adventure Gear
Makalu £280
+ Well priced, great fit, highly comfortable - Heavy, questionable durability
The Makalu uses Sherpa’s own Himaltec laminated 3-layer stretch fabric. With a hydrostatic head measurement of 20,000mm it is less water-resistant than other jackets, but this figure is still more than enough for a winter hard shell. The Himaltec is also relatively breathable for a waterproof material and feels extremely soft – more like a soft shell fabric – which makes the Makalu the most comfortable of the jackets on test. The breathability of the Himaltec fabric is aided by good length pit zips for ventilation and there are several useful pockets. There’s a small Napoleon pocket and two waist pockets (which will take a map but are cramped by a rucksack waistbelt) protected and accessed by sturdy zippers. There are also two internal pockets – one zipped for valuables and a mesh drop pocket for goggles, gloves or a hat. The hood is helmet compatible and adjusted well with a cinch cord on the back and two by the chin. However, visibility isn’t great as it doesn’t move particularly well with your head. Finally, there are lots of nice Himalayan inspired design touches such as prayer flags, and each jacket sold helps educate a child in Nepal for the entirety of their education.

Verdict
Comfortable and with all the features you want in a winter jacket. Soft fabric may be more prone to damage though.
