RESIDENTIAL CENTRES: A SHORT HISTORY
In 1951 White Hall, Britain’s first Local Education Authority Outdoor Centre, opens in the Peak District.
There were 123 residential outdoor centres in Scotland in 1982, with 5718+ beds, 70 of them run by local authorities.
By 2018 Scottish centres had fallen to 64, with 5086 beds,less than a dozen owned by councils.
21% of English school pupils now attend a residential each year.
