Chief Executive, Plas y Brenin & Mountain Training Trust
As a National Outdoor Centre in Snowdonia, Plas y Brenin provides world class training, skills courses and a hub of networking and connection for outdoor lovers and professionals.
“Outdoor learning and adventure tourism has a long and illustrious history, with many of the original innovators for outdoor learning based here in the UK; delivering life-changing outdoor experiences, both land and marine, across our communities.
“The challenges that COVID-19 has presented are particularly poignant, because the very skills and attributes proven to be developed through good outdoor learning are the ones society will need as we recover. The outdoors is proven to develop resilience, confidence, resourcefulness and the ability to work both in a team and independently.
“The infrastructure of our sector is at risk, and with it the crucial role it plays in providing opportunities for people from all walks of life, to engage with their natural environment in a safe and respectful way.
“No less important are the economic and social contributions outdoor learning businesses bring to their local areas, serving as key employers in often remote rural areas.
“The impact of reduced access to high quality, safe outdoor opportunities at a time when it is most needed has potentially far-reaching implications; from mental health, self-esteem and confidence issues, to overall physical health, fitness and well-being. Issues that are exacerbated by the current pandemic.
“The sector is unable to reopen under current legislation and provide the vital residential and outdoor experiences that complement our educational colleagues in schools, colleges and universities. As the National Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin is eager to welcome back students to our residential courses, and has worked with representatives across the sector, national governing bodies and political representatives from both the UK and Welsh Government, to advance this cause.”
