WINTER TROUSERS: BELT OR BRACES?

-

Three options to pick from when picking a pair of bombproof pants for winter mountain use...

Standard waistband: In winter, it’s more important than usual to protect your midriff, so the waistband should sit quite high on a pair of winter trousers. A low profile gives more comfort under a rucksack waistband or harness.

Suspenders: Braces help keep overtrousers in place without restricting movement, and allow for a higher waistband with more protection of the back and core. Some are removable, some sewn in. Braces that clip away from the back make toilet stops easier.

Bib: With a bib at the front and suspenders down the back, these trousers offer maximum coverage, protection and comfort in winter. Ideal for gnarly Scottish winter conditions but overkill on a walk up Cat Bells.
