Finisterre Nebulas
£195
Cornwall is known for its heavy weather, with a coastline that is often battered by North Atlantic gales. So South-West based outdoor brand Finisterre, originally founded to make gear for hardy Cornish surfers, ought to know a few things about making warm outerwear.
The Nebulas certainly delivers. It has the highest fill weight of any jacket we tested, and as a result is deliciously warm. The brand is also known for its sustainable approach, so this jacket’s fill is made from 100% recycled polyester. As is the ripstop face fabric, which also has a fluorocarbon-free water repellent finish.
But the eco-friendly approach hasn’t meant compromising on performance. This jacket is warm, windproof and protective. The well-designed hood has three-point adjustment, with lowprofile, integrated cordlocks around the face. There’s a hem drawcord with reinforced webbing for durability, and a chunky main zip with an inner stormflap plus a chinguard. You get a big zipped inner pocket too. The fleecelined pockets are not zipped, though this doesn’t really matter because they are so cosily inviting that all you ever want to put in them are your hands.
It’s worth noting that the Nebulas has a relaxed, boxy fit. This leaves ample room for layers underneath, but even so you may want to size down, as we did.
IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY
The main drawbacks of this jacket are its weight and pack size. It rolls away neatly into its hood but even then it is a bit of a lump. At 800g, it’s also the heaviest jacket here.
■ FABRIC 100% recycled ripstop polyester with PFC-free DWR treatment
■ FILL 100% recycled polyester C-Form insulation
■ MEN’S SIZES XS-XXL
■ WOMEN’S SIZES 8-16
■ WEIGHT 800g (men’s M)
Verdict
The warmest jacket in this line-up, the Nebulas is a real beast, but a friendly one with impeccable eco credentials. The trade-off is extra weight and bulk.
