Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoody
£220
Designed primarily as a mid layer for active use in cold conditions, the Atom LT is a popular choice among outdoor types. That might seem a little strange, since it’s not the warmest synthetic jacket around, but what it lacks in outright warmth it makes up for in versatility, since this is a super soft and very wearable layer that works across a wide range of temperatures.
This jacket is all about balancing insulating power with breathability. As such, it uses zoned construction, with Coreloft Compact synthetic fill combined with stretch fleece side panels. It is only water-resistant and isn’t totally windproof, so in breezy conditions you’ll need a shell over the top. But otherwise you can wear it pretty much all day, staying warm without overheating, particularly since the tailored but comfy fit allows for great mobility. In this regard it does a similar job to the Montane Icarus Stretch, but more successfully thanks to its superior temperature regulation.
The twin fleecy zipped pockets keep hands toasty and the stretch fabric cuffs easily accommodate light gloves, while locking in warmth. There’s also a useful zipped inside chest pocket plus an insulated hood with rear adjustment.
IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY
Nothing that carries the Arc’teryx logo is cheap. Nor does this jacket use any recycled fabrics or fill – though a new dope dying process for the liner does save water and use less CO2. Although it adds some warmth the hood is a little baggy, so for use as a mid layer, save £20 and buy the hoodless version.
