Montane Tornado

£75

-

+ Lightweight, extremely dexterous, Gore-Tex waterproofing, women’s fit

- Not the warmest, small cuff, no wrist adjustment

The Montane Tornados have a lighter, more minimalist design than the ski-style, long-cuffed gloves in this test. The result is much improved dexterity, with a closer and more precise fit enabling you to use your hands and fingers unhindered. This is perfect for scrambling, using poles, grabbing stuff out of your backpack or fiddling with jacket zips and hoods. Despite the light, pared-back design, durability is excellent too, thanks to an extensive layer of goat leather in the palm, while the nylon soft shell outer has 60g of Primaloft Gold insulation as well as a Gore-Tex waterproof lining. They aren’t the thickest or warmest, but for cold (rather than freezing) days they provide ample insulation and the waterproofing is excellent. There is no wrist tightening, but the short cuff has a Velcro tab adjuster (which is easy to use with one hand). Tighten this and the gloves fit neatly underneath a jacket, instead of over it. You also get a nose wipe on the thumb, a soft and quick-drying microfleece interior, and pre-curved fingers for a natural fit.

Verdict

A versatile, minimalist glove with Gore-Tex waterproofing and great dexterity – but not the warmest.
