NY143211 Head east on the road momentarily and then turn north on the path through fields to Foulsyke. Turn left on road briefly and turn right at fingerpost sign. Pass house, go through gate and take track north-west into woodland. Beyond gate turn right on path heading north-north-east along the edge of trees, crossing two stiles as you continue. At a stream ascend left over steep ground, cross a stile, continue ahead briefly and turn right to pick up a trod heading north following a wall. Join the main path coming up from Thackthwaite and continue north. At the northernmost tip of the path, veer off right on a clear trod that crosses Meregill Beck heading for Fellbarrow. Follow the wall towards Hatteringill Head and then swing south alongside a fence to ascend to the trig point of Fellbarrow.

2

NY132242 Descend south along a fence to the col before Smithy Fell and – to avoid an unnecessary ascent – veer off left on a good track that heads to the east of Sourfoot Fell. Rejoin the main Low Fell route at the gate close to Watching Crag and continue south on a clear path, crossing a stile as you go, to the cairned summit of Low Fell.

3

NY137226 Descend south to the col before the southern top of Low Fell, cross a stile and turn right on a faint trod that drops steeply west to Crabtree Beck. Ignore the daunting-looking climb of Darling Fell ahead and instead follow the beck south to a sheepfold. Loop around Darling Fell on a clear path, which is not marked on OS Maps but proves relatively easy to follow, and pick up a track that heads north-west to Askill. Cross a stile and take the road south and then west down to the small car park on the shores of Loweswater.

4

NY118224 Head south-west to the farm at Hudson Place and continue south-east on the popular path around the lake. Go through a gate to enter Holme Wood and, after 300m on the main track, turn sharp right on a rough path that climbs to Holme Force waterfall. Continue south-east through the wood for 400m before turning west to climb on a minor path.

Emerge from the trees to pick up the main terrace path, cross Holme Beck and loop northwest around Burnbank Fell. Cross a gate with a ladder stile and bear left on a faint path that veers south-east and then south-west, passing a large cairn on the way, to arrive at the summit of Burnbank Fell.

5

NY110209 The simple ridge route to the remaining Wainwrights poses few navigational problems, thanks to a handy fence guiding the way, but the scenery is somewhat bleak. Drop south to the col above the source of Holme Beck and then climb on the gentle, grassy path that leads to the summit of Blake Fell. A large cairn marks the highest point of the Loweswater Fells. Descend south along the fence to the col at Fothergill Head before climbing easily to summit Gavel Fell.

6

NY116183 Take the ridge north-east on a faint track past the subsidiary 488m top and onward toward Black Crag. At the nose of the ridge, steer clear of the craggy, steeper ground to the north and instead drop down safely to the main footpath. Turn left and descend to High Nook Farm. Go past the farm buildings, cross Highnook Beck and pick up the track to Maggie’s Bridge. Take the road north-east and at the junction turn right to return to the red phone box in Loweswater.
