Bwlch y Ddeufaen to Conwy

DAY 3

1 SH714719 This is now the last leg, but it isn’t quite all downhill from here. Climb east out of the pass, following the wall beneath the power lines as it goes steeply uphill. Continue alongside the wall as it bears right, following a meandering path through bilberry and heather. Go over Foel Lwyd and descend to a pass, where a more defined footpath crosses the route. Ignore this path and continue following the wall up to the summit of Tal y Fan. The hillside is craggy and there are some short, easy scrambles to negotiate. Cross the wall via the stile to reach the trig pillar.

2 SH729727 Go back over the stile and continue alongside the wall, heading east-northeast along the craggy ridge. The path leaves the wall at one point to avoid a particularly steep crag. Beyond this, continue following the wall to a dip in the ground, just before the wall swings right. Turn left here down the hillside along a faint path, which joins another path that runs past a small quarry. Continue downhill towards a large enclosure and bear left to reach the standing stone of Maen Penddu.

3 SH740736 Turn right along the wide quarry access track, following it below Cefn Maen Amor until it reaches a wall at the edge of numerous small fields. Continue north, keeping to the left of the wall. Stay on the track for 450m and then take a smaller path bearing left towards a pass between minor hills.

4 SH749755 Continue downhill on a clear track, passing right of a small lake, Llyn y Wrach. The route swings left then right, crossing the North Wales Path (NWP) long distance route. Head towards the wall and follow it north, then descend a narrow walled lane. Where the walls end, bear right along a narrow path that contours around the hillside above Capelulo and the Sychnant Pass. The path bears right at a rocky outcrop and shortly joins the NWP, turning sharp left to reach the car park at Pensychnant.

5 SH750770 Cross the road and follow the wide track for 200m to the head of the valley. Climb the hillside beneath the crags of Allt Wen. Continue along the winding main track, still following the NWP at various path junctions along the hillside.

6 SH753777 At another path junction, turn right and continue for about 100m. Leave the NWP here as it turns right and instead go north-east to climb the left side of the ridge. There are various paths on the ground here, but they all converge as they head towards the Iron Age hill-fort near the summit of Conwy Mountain (Mynydd y Dref).

7 SH761779 Continue along the ridge as it drops down towards Conwy, rejoining the NWP. The path goes right, downhill through trees before emerging onto a road. Turn left along the road and through a housing estate, then bear right on the same road to meet Cadnant Park. Turn left for 70m, then go right. Cross the road bridge, go right along Bangor Road and pass through the gateway in the town walls to head into the town centre. Turn left down the High Street and then right along Castle Street to arrive at Conwy Castle, the finish point.
