Nose: Takes a while but then releases plenty of wood notes, pencil shavings, planed oak and then sticky, sweet blackberry jam comes through. Syrup waffles, oranges in brandy and marmalade of hot toast. A little new leather too.

Palate: Pears in cider, plenty of golden syrup, crumpets and honey. There is a citrus edge here and building sweet chilli heat.

Finish: A little clove spice cuts through that honey and numbs gentle, then the heat rises with sweet chilli spices.

Comments: Great punch a lovely sweetness.

Nose: At first, hickory, black tea, bergamot and fresh BBQ beef steak, with applesauce on the side. Then dessert: pear tart with cinnamon, vanilla ice cream and pomegranate drizzle.

Palate: Punnets of red fruits: cherries, plums and raspberries, with a side of pomegranate juice. Blackcurrant wine gums. Black tea is back – or is it spiced chai? – with that vanilla returning.

Finish: More black tea, with vanilla sweetness and poached pear that fades to an ashy note.

Comments: Marvellously moreish. Components for a great afternoon dinner in the garden.
