OVER THE HORIZON

Virgin Atlantic has added Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie to its exclusive Upper Class drinks menu

- Words: Phoebe Calver

Inspired by the coastal vitality and shipbuilding heritage of the town of Salcombe, Devon, Salcombe Distilling Co. creates an exceptional collection of Salcombe Gins, as well as the New London Light non-alcoholic spirits and aperitifs, at its waterside distillery on Island Street, Salcombe – one of the world’s only distilleries directly accessible by boat.

Following on from its success in Virgin Atlantic’s onboard Duty Free, where it was listed earlier this year, Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie has been selected to be part of the airline’s pouring service in Upper Class from October 2022, where guests will be able to enjoy the appropriately named Over the Horizon cocktail.

Alongside its listings in onboard Duty Free and Upper Class with Virgin Atlantic, the multiaward-winning Rosé Sainte Marie will soon also be available in all of the six Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses worldwide, which are known for their exclusivity and luxurious surroundings. The majority of these are in America, where Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie is seeing rapid growth with listings in Bevmo!, Total Wine and drizly.com, amongst others.

Passengers on Virgin Atlantic can pre-order Duty Free Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie ahead of their flights.

Angus Lugsdin, co-founder of Salcombe Distilling Co., says, “To be selected by Virgin Atlantic to form part of their pouring service in Upper Class reflects the outstanding quality of this gin. A huge amount of care was taken to create an elegant spirit which really stands out in the crowded ‘pink gin’ category, and we are delighted that this has been recognised in such a way.”

Salcombe Gin was launched in 2016 and is distilled in Provident, a 450-litre copper pot still which stands behind glass doors at the company's waterside distillery. Drawing influence from the famous 19th-century Salcombe fruit schooners, Salcombe Distilling Co. uses only the finest fresh citrus fruits and spices to create its range of multi-awardwinning Salcombe Gins.

Inspired by the Mediterranean coast, Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie is bright, fresh and elegant. Its aroma and flavour have been created to be reminiscent of Southern France and to emulate the qualities of a dry rosé wine. This gin sets a new precedent for flavoured gin, in particular pink gin – a corner of the market that has historically been populated by many artificially flavoured and sweetened drinks.

Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie is purposefully dry, with no added sugar, artificial colours or flavours. The gin pays homage to the Sainte Marie lighthouse in the South of France, which marks where 19th-century Salcombe fruit schooners were loaded with supplies of citrus fruits and herbs.

It is distilled with Macedonian juniper berries, angelica and strawberries, alongside an additional 12 hand-sourced botanicals including orange blossom, rose petals, fresh lemon, orange peel and pink peppercorns.

On the ground, Salcombe Gin Rosé Sainte Marie (41.4% ABV) is available from selected Waitrose & Partners stores, and online at waitrose.com and salcombegin.com at an RRP of £40.00 for a 70cl bottle.
