The Scott Trial

- ARTICLE: JOHN HULME, WITH THANKS TO BARRY ROBINSON AND BARRY WATSON PICTURES: MALCOLM CARLING AND JOHN HULME

I had attended the world famous Scott time and observation Trial many times with my father until I first rode in the late seventies. I will argue that it’s the ultimate trials test of man and machine. It has an attraction which becomes infectious and yes I became a victim, I still am in fact. The hazards are well known in the folklore of the trials world and in particular in North Yorkshire, the home of the event. First used in the 1950’s the hazards at Washfold hold many memories for the readers of Trial Magazine and our sister publication Classic Trial Magazine. It was while I was at the 2016 Scott with my wife Jane that we made a visit to the hazards at Washfold which are now overgrown and lost forever, last used in 1995. As I walked over to the main rock steps with my camera in hand to take some pictures my mind raced back in time to the years when this was a serious rider — and spectator — hazard. Through the camera of Malcom Carling we take you back in time to the golden era of trials in the seventies and 1970 to show you just what it was like approaching fifty years ago.
