KIT HARINGTON stars in BBC1’S thrilling historical drama
HERE’S A LOOK AT Game of Thrones star Kit Harington as he plays his 17th-century ancestor Robert Catesby in BBC1’S epic new period drama Gunpowder.
The three-part series, airing this autumn, and executive produced by Harington, centres on the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, which saw a group of provincial English Catholics make a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James (The Missing’s Derek Riddell).
It explores how devout Catholic Catesby, a widowed single father, devised the daring plot and recruited a group of like-minded men, including Guy Fawkes (Downton Abbey’s Tom Cullen), to help him carry it out, in a bid to counter the widespread Protestant persecution of his faith.
Liv Tyler plays Catesby’s cousin Anne Vaux, who becomes anxious about the plot, while Mark Gatiss co-stars as the king’s spymaster Robert Cecil, who wages a ruthless campaign against Catholics, and Peter Mullan is Jesuit priest Henry Garnet, who is inadvertently drawn into the affair. David Bamber, Shaun Dooley and Kevin Eldon also star.
