Invictus Games
From Sunday, BBC1 HD
THE THIRD INVICTUS Games gets under way in Toronto, Canada, this Sunday. The event, founded by Prince Harry, once again comprises 12 sports and features armed forces personnel from 17 nations who have all suffered physical or mental injuries while serving on the frontline.
Here, Steve Brown, captain of the Paralympicsgb wheelchair rugby squad at the 2012 Games in London, and now a BBC1 commentator, picks three sporting highlights to look out for…
POWERLIFTING
Tuesday, 7pm & Wednesday, 8pm
‘THIS IS A GREAT SPORT to watch – you can feel the crowd willing the powerlifters on and almost pushing up the bar for them. Last time, the UK team had Micky Yule but he has gone over to the Paralympics, so this year it’s more unpredictable.’
WHEELCHAIR RUGBY
Thursday, from 8pm
‘THE UK TEAM got gold at London in 2014 and bronze in America in 2016 so it will be interesting to see what happens in Canada. The team has some old heads like Charlie Walker; with his experience, he’ll be able to mentor the new people.’
WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL
Friday, from 8.30pm
‘THIS IS ALWAYS a spectacle and the crowds really get behind it. The USA team is the one to watch. Last year they annihilated everyone and that has given them a real boost going into these Games. I know they’ll still have the same drive.’
