The action hots up for 9-1-1’s first responders

- New drama 9-1-1

THE FIRST RESPONDERS in Ryan Murphy’s breathless drama 9-1-1 had some extreme cases to deal with in the show’s first season, including a plane crash and a woman being strangled by her own pet boa constrictor.

In the second series, the show goes even bigger and bolder with its disasters, including a road rage incident involving a packed Hollywood tour bus and an earthquake that rocks LA.

There are also a few shocks in the personal lives of the first responders. Firefighter Buck Buckley (Oliver Stark) is stunned when his estranged older sister Maddie Kendall (Jennifer Love Hewitt) turns up out of the blue.

‘Maddie was in a marriage with a very controlling man and she and Buck haven’t spoken for years,’ explains executive producer Tim Minear. ‘She is looking for a new beginning.’ The former ER nurse gets her fresh start by becoming an emergency call operator and is soon thrown in at the deep end.

Buck is also feeling threatened by the arrival of firefighter Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), a decorated ex-army medic and a single father with a son with special needs.

Meanwhile, police sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) has come to terms with her long-time husband being gay. But, after the break-up of her family, she is cautious. ‘Athena is having trouble finding her footing,’ explains Minear. ‘She doesn’t want to admit she is in a couple again.’
