WIMBLEDON 2020

As the BBC relives classic matches, ANNABEL CROFT shares her favourite finals

-

THIS YEAR’S WIMBLEDON, which was due to begin this week, has been cancelled, but there’s still hours of action from SW19 over the next fortnight with the BBC replaying a host of memorable matches from the archives.

The coverage begins on Sunday (BBC2, 1.05pm) with a review of last year’s tournament, followed weekday afternoons by Clare Balding turning back the clock with Wimbledon

Rewind, before Sue Barker presents an evening show from the grounds of the All England Club, where special guests will join her to discuss all things Wimbledon.

Former British ace Annabel Croft, 53, will be among the guests, and we caught up with her to find out her favourite clashes from over the years…

BJÖRN BORG V JOHN MCENROE 1980

‘The 1980 final was one of my earliest memories and had an epic tie-break. Borg was so cool and calm and Mcenroe was this brash American threatening to unseat him.’

VENUS WILLIAMS V

LINDSAY DAVENPORT 2005

‘This is the longest ladies final we’d ever seen at Wimbledon. The quality of the match was exceptional and I remember thinking I couldn’t believe what these two women were doing.’

ROGER FEDERER V NOVAK DJOKOVIC 2019 ‘Last year’s marathon men’s final was very special. Many of us were hoping Roger could win another title and he came so close, but it wasn’t to be. He and Serena Williams will be desperate to come back to Wimbledon one more time before they retire.’ There’s also live tennis to enjoy this week. The Battle of the Brits tournament, featuring the UK’S top male players, concludes in Roehampton on Saturday and Sunday (coverage on Amazon Prime Video).
