‘It’s a revealing portrait of a remarkable woman,’ says royal biographer and the programme’s producer Robert Hardman, who has spent a year filming the Princess Royal, enjoying unprecedented access as she carries out royal duties, plays with her grandchildren and relaxes at her Gloucestershire home, Gatcombe Park.
‘The Princess has been in the public eye since she was born, but guards her privacy,’ he says. ‘She doesn’t do many interviews, so it was wonderful to chat to her. She’s a very impressive and funny woman.’
