The Fowlers and Kazemis both set their sights on Sonia’s old house

In a far-fetched storyline, Martin and Stacey this week set their sights on renting Sonia’s old place. With a typical Victorian house in east London costing around £3,000 a month to rent, we can only assume they’ve come up trumps on the lottery, or that fruitand-veg peddler Martin is suddenly selling a lot of King Edwards.

The loved-up pair have been forced to reassess their living arrangements after agreeing to take in Martin’s daughter, Bex. Their current FLAT/TARDIS – which was already home to themselves, Lily, baby Arfur, Kyle and Belinda – just won’t hack it any more.

At first, they look into renting Masood’s house, and when that’s a non-starter, Tina suggests they take over the lease on the former Jackson/butcher residence. Martin likes the idea and is pleased to discover that they can get out of the contract on their flat, but Stacey’s worried about the upfront costs, like the deposit.

Not wanting to see his wife disappointed, Martin vows to get the cash together, and turns to Ian and Jane for help. When Ian says there’s nothing they can do, what with the Beale business empire going down the pan, Jane asks if she can look at the books to check if there’s any spare cash. Steven insists on doing it himself and promptly reports back that the well hath run dry – no doubt because he’s been creaming off the profits for himself.

Jane then has another bright idea (which we’re not allowed to tell you about) to raise the cash. It works a treat, but before Martin and Stacey can celebrate, they hear that Sonia’s place has already been taken. Turns out they’ve been pipped at the post by the Kazemis.

A furious Martin confronts an oblivious Kush and the two men realise it’s all Carmel’s doing – well, she is market enforcement officer, and a woman with a fancy job title needs a fancy house to go with it.

Can Martin persuade her to back off and let him and Stacey have the property instead? And if he does, can he and Stace manage to pay the rent each month without being forced to eat out-of-date vegetables for their tea every night?
