While Pretty Woman may have put Richard Gere back on the Hollywood map, this was the film to prove what a good actor he could be. It was a gamble for Gere, favourite romantic-lead material, to take the role of Dennis Peck, an LA cop up to his eyes in corruption and being hunted by Internal Affairs’ Andy Garcia. Director Mike Figgis injects fierce sunlight into most shots, showing that it’s not just in the dark that monsters lurk.
