Released in 1966 to a murmur rather than a roar, pet sounds is now considered to be the best album the Beach Boys ever made, and one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Masterminded by Brian Wilson, it was a distinct break from Beach Boys albums of old, with a mix of sublime tunes, sweet harmonies and madcap studio experimentation that avoided mention of surf, cars and girls (maybe not so much the girls).
