Essex-born Alan says his mum influenced his career choice. ‘My mother made me what I am before she died. I remember her laugh and I always wanted to make her laugh’.

Alan is well-known for giving wrong answers on BBC2 comedy panel show QI. However, host Sandi Toksvig insists it’s all an act, ‘He’s one of the cleverest, most charming people I have ever worked with.’

Alan, 51, insists that we will be watching him be on our TV screens for a long time yet, ‘I’m like a fine wine. I’m maturing. Is that right? Or am I like a mature cheese? Stinky!’
