Hugh was born in Kettering. His father was a vicar and his mum was a primary school teacher. The family moved to the East End of London when Hugh was three months old.

Hugh, 55, was a fan of C4’s Homeland until his wife let him in on a secret, ‘My wife was at college with Damian Lewis, so every time it was on she’d say, “I snogged him in a car park!”.

Hugh’s nickname is ‘Desk’, ‘The name was given to me on about my third day at university. In fact some of my mates still call me Desk – and weirdly, so does Sue Perkins, who I wasn’’t even at university with!’
