It’s a tall order to find somebody who would be able to rival the nation’s favourite swashbuckling hero

Ross Poldark, played by heartthrob of the moment Aidan Turner.

But, luckily, Poldark’s leading lady, Eleanor Tomlinson, knew just the man to fit the bill when casting directors were hunting for the perfect person to play dashing aristocrat and poet Hugh Armitage.

Eleanor quickly suggested her friend, actor and Burberry model Josh Whitehouse, and her bosses soon snapped him up…

‘I’d just done the film Alleycats with Josh, so I mentioned his name and told them I thought he was fabulous,’ says Eleanor, as she chats to TV Times during a break in filming the current third series of the hit BBC1 Cornish costume saga.

‘They saw Josh and that was it. I got a phone call afterwards going: “He’s amazing and he really writes

poetry!” I’m glad it worked out.’

Josh made his debut as Lieutenant Hugh in episode three when he was captured by the French and thrown into the prisoner-of-war camp where he made friends with Dr Dwight Enys.

During last week’s episode, the dramatic rescue mission to save Dwight ended up with Ross freeing Hugh as well, and he came back with them to Cornwall.

This week, Ross and Hugh’s bromance continues to blossom when Ross asks Hugh to visit Dwight, who’s struggling to cope after their horrendous ordeal in France.

But Ross needs to keep a close eye on his new friend!

Fans will have spotted Hugh’s admiring glances towards Demelza when he first met her on the beach.

Over the coming weeks, Hugh is set to turn Demelza’s head. But will she succumb to his advances and betray Ross the same way he cheated on her with Elizabeth?

Here, Aidan, Eleanor and Josh tell TV Times about period drama’s hottest love triangle of the year…
