‘Iwas very excited to see who would be hugh – who could possibly compete with ross? it’s my second project with Josh. it’s great to have him on the show and explore these storylines,’ says eleanor.

‘i think ross is going to get what he deserves! demelza’s flattered to have someone paying attention to her. ross plays the hero a lot of the time and doesn’t deal with situations closer to home.

‘What is so attractive to demelza about hugh is that he appreciates

her for who she is – she’s not perfect and she isn’t an aristocrat. the relationship between them doesn’t deliberately come into the show to create scandal. it’s a friendship more than anything, it’s not a hot steamy romance. it’s a slow-burner that comes from being left behind and ignored by her husband, who doesn’t open up to her or include her in decisions.

‘playing a woman in a marriage that isn’t all roses has been interesting. you often see hollywood-ised romances but ross and demelza’s is very real. i think that’s what people relate to.’
