‘Don’t mention hugh’s name! ha! does ross know what’s going on? no, not in that capacity. it’s hard not to notice things like that when you’re married to somebody and they may take a shine to someone else,’ says aidan.

‘ross might suspect something is going on. he can sense an energy between them. hugh is young and ross likes him a lot, they were in France together. and what grounds does ross have to say anything? ‘the relationship between ross and demelza has always felt very real for eleanor and i, that’s why it is so enjoyable to play. We can really track the progress of their relationship and when we shoot a scene, we do our research on what has come before to see where they are at.

‘eleanor and i have worked together for so long that we are very familiar with each other and our relationship progresses alongside that of our characters. When we are doing these scenes you’re just looking into that person’s eyes and relating to them in that context. it feels like any relationship would feel, it’s very real for us.’
