A Street Cat Named Bob

film / 8.00pm / Sky Cinema Premiere

-

Based on James Bowen’s best-selling memoir, this is the true story of how recovering drug addict James (played with conviction by Luke Treadaway) saw his life turned around thanks to a stray ginger cat and a caring social worker (Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt). Although it has its gritty moments, this relies heavily on feelgood sentimentality, which stretches credulity a few times too many – especially when it comes to James’s potential romantic relationship with his neighbour Betty (Ruta Gedmintas). That said, the handsome moggy (who is played by the real Bob and a few stunt Bobs) is, indeed, very entertaining and the story bounces along to a satisfying finale.
