1961

Diana Frances Spencer is born on 1 July at Park House on the San­dring­ham es­tate, the third child of John Spencer, Vis­count Althorp, and his wife Frances – they would di­vorce eight years later.

1981

Aged just 20, Diana is given the ti­tle of Princess of Wales on the oc­ca­sion of her mar­riage to Prince Charles.

1982

Wil­liam Arthur Philip Louis is born 21 June.

1984

Diana’s sec­ond child, Henry Charles Al­bert David, is born on 15 Septem­ber.

1992

Charles and Diana an­nounce their sep­a­ra­tion. They di­vorce four years later.

1995

Nearly 23 mil­lion peo­ple watch Diana’s BBC TV in­ter­view, in which says she hoped to be ‘the Queen of peo­ple’s hearts’.

1997

The princess and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, are killed in a car crash in Paris.

2004

To com­mem­o­rate Diana’s life, the Queen un­veils a foun­tain me­mo­rial in Lon­don’s Hyde Park – Wil­liam and Harry are in at­ten­dance.

2009

In his role of pa­tron of Cen­tre­point – a char­ity for the home­less, his mother’s favourite – Wil­liam spends a night sleep­ing rough.

2017

The princes open up about their mother's life and legacy fully for the first time in an ITV doc­u­men­tary.
