1961
Diana Frances Spencer is born on 1 July at Park House on the Sandringham estate, the third child of John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, and his wife Frances – they would divorce eight years later.
1981
Aged just 20, Diana is given the title of Princess of Wales on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Charles.
1982
William Arthur Philip Louis is born 21 June.
1984
Diana’s second child, Henry Charles Albert David, is born on 15 September.
1992
Charles and Diana announce their separation. They divorce four years later.
1995
Nearly 23 million people watch Diana’s BBC TV interview, in which says she hoped to be ‘the Queen of people’s hearts’.
1997
The princess and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, are killed in a car crash in Paris.
2004
To commemorate Diana’s life, the Queen unveils a fountain memorial in London’s Hyde Park – William and Harry are in attendance.
2009
In his role of patron of Centrepoint – a charity for the homeless, his mother’s favourite – William spends a night sleeping rough.
