On the cover in... 1981
It was a royal romance that would end in acrimony, divorce and ultimately tragedy, but none of that could have been predicted when Prince Charles and his bride-to-be, Lady Diana Spencer, graced our cover ahead of their wedding on 29 July, 1981.
The appointed photographer for the joyous occasion was the Queen’s second cousin, Patrick Lichfield, who captured the couple in a relaxed pose before their big day.
‘It’s important that they shouldn’t appear too undignified,’ he told us, adding, ‘All the modern royals are aware of camera power.’
