mickey rourke is extraordinary in what is surely his finest performance to date. Burnt-out wrestler Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson dreams of one last chance, until a heart attack puts paid to that. Attempting a relationship with stripper Marisa Tomei (equally brilliant), he also tries to reconnect with a daughter who loathes him, but the ring is always calling… Rourke brings a humanity to Randy that you can empathise with. It’s upsetting, heart-wrenching and quietly magnificent.
