SCOTT GILMORE

Subtle Vertigo 7/10

- Retro synth-funk meets high-class chillout SAM RICHARDS”

Mark Barrott’s excellent recent albums Sketches From A Small Island (Vols 1 & 2) were an attempt to reclaim Balearic chillout music from the gurning hordes. That mission continues here, with a new signing to his International Feel label. Not that Scott Gilmore, a resident of LA’s San Fernando Valley, has ever been to Ibiza, nor strolled down many of the European boulevards and forest trails he attempts to evoke on this imaginary travelogue. It means that his mellow homages to pastoral Krautrock and ’60s exotica sound faintly, intriguingly off, Gilmore’s use of primitive synths and reel-to-reel tape lending them a woozy sheen that recalls fellow California dreamer Mild High Club.
