BRIANA MARELA

Call It Love 7/10

- Seattle native’s gleaming, avant-pop third SHARON O’CONNELL

If there’s a structural boldness and conceptual wholeness to Briana Marela’s work, it’s not so surprising given she’s an audio production graduate. But where her previous two LPs suggested someone testing their skills, now her artistic expression has settled. Yet she switches between electronic-pop styles – plush and dreamily (melo)dramatic, and bright, buoyant and percussive – variously recalling Grimes, Jenny hval and Pixx. “Give Me Your Love” and “Last Time” may articulate different relationship stages, but are euphoric in their own ways, while “Quit” is the set’s gloomily glittering centrepiece, steered by Marela’s sweet, pure voice, even as clattering beats try to push it off course.
