STEVEN WILSON

To The Bone 7/10

- Glossy pop-prog mystery from Porcupine Tree mainstay – and mixer for King Crimson, XTC et al MARK BENTLEY

Wilson’s fifth solo LP is a lush and ambitious piece of progressive pop music. Hitting on some heavy influences, including Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, Bends-era Radiohead, and Todd Rundgren’s electronic ballads, this insistently melodic, 11-song set is an old-school, sumof-its-parts experience. A concept album, perhaps – lyrically hung on the paranoia, injustice and political uncertainty of 2017 – To The Bone deliberately strains under the ideas and production sounds of the late ’80s and ’90s. “Blank Tapes” and “People Who Eat Darkness” are eerie, jittery highlights.
