Liberation Day landmark concert makes for an engrossing culture clash
In August 2015, Slovenian provocateurs Laibach became the first foreign rock band to play North Korea. “I’m setting up the blindest of blind dates,” ponders director Morten Traavik, whose tact and inordinate patience help fix a path through a ridiculous amount of state officialdom and suspicion. The group finally make it to Pyongyang, where they serenade a politely bemused crowd with “The Final Countdown”, “Live Is Life” and selections from The Sound Of Music, a North Korean favourite. Strange and hugely compelling. Extras: None.
